Five fully deserved stars for this high-octane ride both in terms of action and emotion. Hold Fast by USA bestselling authors Olivia Rigal and Shannon Macallan is a dark story with a strong romance streak that you shouldn’t pass by. Read on for the book’s details and my 5-star review.

Hold Fast

by Olivia Rigal and Shannon Macallan
Publication Date: July 30, 2016
Genres: Dark romance, thriller

One needs to be rescued.
The other needs to be saved.

Sean: When I was a SEAL, I lived my life by one motto: HOLD FAST.
Those two words kept me alive through years of war, but they couldn’t save all my brothers in arms, and they couldn’t save my career.
Now I’m home, back in the world, with more nightmares and scars than ten men should have, and the only woman who can make me whole again is missing.

I don’t care where she is or who has her. There is nothing I won’t do to find her and bring her home.

To me.

Courtney: I’m trapped, and there’s no way out. I need to escape this cult and leave this hell behind, but I can’t do it alone.
I knew the Church of the New Revelation was a bad idea when my mother brought me here, but I didn’t know how bad. I’m a prisoner, and this noose draws tighter around my neck every day.

There’s only one bright spot in my life, only one man who could save me. He’s the only man I’ve ever loved, but he left me behind when he enlisted all those years ago.

Sean, where are you?

My Review

Hold Fast is not a beach read. It delivers powerful messages in a very evocative way. Courtney is a prisoner, captive in the worst possible way. Because when you’re forcefully told that your perception of your predicament is totally wrong, and that you’re actually in heaven when you’re in the worst possible hell, then how can you go on? But Courtney is a believer. Not of the nightmarish nonsense her captives hammer into her; she believes in fighting for freedom. And nothing will stand in her way.

That kind of harrowing story should be told in a great voice, and the authors deliver. The writing here is stellar. Vivid and immersive, it took me right in the thick of things. I don’t remember the last time I rooted for a heroine as much as I did for Courtney.

Poignant, evocative and extremely relevant, this story shows that extremism has no color, no religion and wears no particular garb. A must read that deserves serious praise.

Stranger in my House by Mari Manning

How about some mystery to spice up things today? I’ve got the right book for you. Stranger in my House is the second book in Mari Manning’s Murder in Teas series, featuring a feisty heroine, who assumes her sister’s identity to find a murderer, and a reluctant ranch manager who struggles with his growing feelings. Read on for all the book details and a delicious excerpt, but before you do, here is Mari Manning’s awesome idea to boost this summer’s romance.

Mari’s #RomanticIdea:

This is my favorite #romanticidea. On a clear summer night, swathe yourself in bug repellant, spread a blanket on the back lawn or your deck or the sand of a nearby beach, and count the stars. And while you’re counting the stars imagine you are on a giant spaceship traveling through the solar system at 66,600 miles per hour. Imagine the miracle of you, that out of all the billions of stars and planets and the infinitesimal bits of matter, you are.

If you are with a loved one, grab their hand and squeeze.

About Stranger in my House

When Officer Kirby Swallow’s half-sister is threatened, Kirby assumes her sister’s identity and journeys to the remote Texas ranch her sister calls home to catch a killer. Kirby confronts a growing list of suspects and a rising body count, not to mention the ranch manager, Seth Maguire, who sees past the charade to the warm, generous girl beneath. But can Kirby trust a man who rejects the one thing she holds dear: family? Her love dares all, but as the killer closes in, will it also be blind?

Self-reliant Seth Maguire is manager of the struggling Shaw Valley Ranch. His future appears empty until the ranch’s wild, unpredictable heiress suddenly morphs into a very hot lady cop. What starts out as just another seduction turns into something deep and, for him, frightening. Then the killer is revealed and Seth is faced with an impossible choice. Will his fragile, uncertain love be enough to save Kirby?

Maguire rubbed his chin and studied her. A dangerous gleam lit his eyes. “Never seen you so nosy before.”

Panic squeezed her, then it was gone. He couldn’t prove she wasn’t Frankie, and in a few days she’d be in Tulsa, and Frankie would be back in Shaw Valley. There was nothing more to learn here, and by the looks of him, Maguire needed time to cool down.

“I should go,” she said, stepping back from him.

“Stick around, Frankie. The new you is sort of growing on me.” His gaze swept down her body and landed on her ballet flats. “Maybe you’d like to help me clean the lavender screens. Seeing as you got your sensible shoes on today. You liked feeding the horses, didn’t you? This will be fun, too.”

Her heart thumped. “I’d just be in the way.”

“You helped me last year.” He studied her. “Remember? It was your first week at the ranch, and you came wandering in here. Just like now. Said you wanted to work at my side.” His eyes bored into hers. “You were wearing those ridiculous shoes. You remember them, don’t you?” Something in his gaze and the way he moved closer made her throat constrict.

“Uh, yes. Of course.”

“What did you call those shoes again?” He took another step. The heat of his body closed around her. The scents of detergent and perspiration and anger assaulted her nose.

She pulled out of his reach and said, “Heels?”

They were eye to eye now. Sparring for answers neither of them was willing to provide. The words hardly mattered.

Maguire shook his head. “No. Something else. Sounded Italian.”

Slowly, carefully, steadily, he kept coming. A hunter closing in on his prey. He breached her personal space, hovering over her. The toes of his boots pressed against her ballet flats. Her eyes were even with his thick chest. If she ran, he’d know. Guilt always ran.

She held her ground. “What do you think you’re doing?”

Talon (The Uncompromising Series, Book 1)

Talon (The Uncompromising Series, Book 1)

by Sybil Bartel
Purchase Link: Amazon

I’ve been expecting Talon‘s book since Impossible Promise, where his “nothin’ doin'” drawl and surfer good looks completely at odds with his precision military-style moves captivated me. I wasn’t disappointed. Sybil Bartel‘s choice to write a full-length novel solely from the male protagonist’s point of view was risky but it paid off. Talon has a multi-layered personality, he can be tough as nails, sugar sensitive, sexy as hell. Here he surprises himself with his crippling need to also be protective and keep a woman by his side. And not just any woman. Nicole is tangled in such a complex web of sins and crimes, the last thing she’d expect was for a hit-and-run lover like Talon to take her under his wing. But he’s not alone. He’s got his team of hardcore ex-military men, who’d put their life on the line for him come hell or high water. Talon would take high water any time of the day, but it’s pure hell for him and Nicole. Yet, he’s the only man who can show her what heaven feels like.

Non-stop high octane action, tough love but also heart-rending emotion that literally had me in tears at one point. I didn’t want this book to end, and I can’t wait for Neil’s story.

About the Author

Sybil grew up in Northern California with her head in a book and her feet in the sand. She used to dream of becoming a painter but the heady scent of libraries with their shelves full of books about wistful summer days and first loves drew her into the world of storytelling. Her true literary love is the New Adult genre but really, any story about a love so desperately wrong and impossibly beautiful, makes her swoon.

Sybil now resides in Southern Florida and while she doesn’t get to read as much as she likes, she still buries her toes in the sand. If she’s not writing or fighting to contain the banana plantation in her backyard, you can find her spending time with her handsomely tattooed husband, her brilliantly practical son and a mischievous miniature boxer who stole her heart.

My Review

Hollywood? Hello? Studios should be scrambling to get the rights for this one. Have you read an author and thought they were perfect? Never faltering in any type of scene? Well, Sue Whyshynski is one of those authors. Words just flow, creating super evocative scenes that you can actually experience with your senses. From mind-numbing terror to bone-melting attraction, Sue’s got you. Exciting chase scenes, sizzling tension, darkness and mystery in vibrating settings. It never goes wrong.

The story has a strong sci-fi theme with sprawling tentacles, encapsulating such genres as thriller, urban fantasy and romance. My one grievance (not even that) is that a story that’s explicit in dark scenes and violence should not shy away from love scenes especially when the attraction between the hero and the heroine sizzles from Page 1.

The Butterfly Code is a book that made the Top 3 of my 2015 Best Reads list. I highly recommend it to readers of any genre.

I was offered this book in exchange for an honest review but also bought my own copy. I always do that when I truly enjoy a book.

Chick-lit meets thriller: Scandal (Part 1) by Alison Foster (Review)

A real page-turner. It’s been a long time since I read a book that really made my pulse accelerate (what is Ella getting into?) and laugh out loud with her snarkiness. Scandal: Part One(a serialized novel) is free right now, so if you’re okay with a heroine with a no holds barred approach and a dirty-mouthed sex god (who could be a murderer), click on the title below. This review tour was brought to you by Xpresso Book Tours.

Scandal: Part One by Alison Foster

Publication date: July 31st 2015
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense
Purchasing Links: Amazon|  B&N

Official Synopsis

Ella Wade knew working at a website called The Daily Scandal might lead to an interesting summer job after graduating college. She did not know that one big mistake would pull her into the heart of a sleazy world of publicity where truths are worse than lies and a murderer is on the loose.

When Ella gives into temptation and sleeps with her stepsister Madison’s ex, her world flips upside down. It doesn’t matter that Madison is dead or that Jaxson Cole wasn’t, in fact, her boyfriend but a publicist’s stunt to link two of the hottest catwalk models romantically in order to feed tabloid curiosity. The damage is done and with deadly consequences.

Even worse, Jax definitely knows things he won’t say. Falling for his epic hotness could mean one good screw will screw Ella for a lifetime.

My Review

She: Fresh-out-of-college Ella Wade, aspiring writer, lands a summer job with The Daily Scandal—a rag. Her waning interest turns into obsession when her boss asks her to go sniff out her dead stepsister’s murderer. The story is written from Ella’s PoV.

He: One word is needed to describe Jaxson Cole: god. The wet dream of million of women worldwide, this top model is spoiled, arrogant and wants Ella. Bad. But his ex-girlfriend (who wasn’t his girlfriend) just died and he wants to help Ella find the culprit. Or mess with her and cover his tracks.

The conflict: The ordinary sibling enters the glam and dirty world of her super model step-sister, which killed her. Determined to find the truth, she dives right in, but Jaxson is the most potent drug. Will she find the truth or lose herself?

The heat: OMG. Very original writing there. Warning: it goes into erotica terriroty.

The good stuff: Super fresh writing. Incredibly witty with subtle yet amazingly effective observations that turn the protagonists into truly complex characters. The suspense element is there, getting stronger towards the end.

The other stuff: for a romance, I wasn’t certain who the Hero was. If not for the blurb, I wouldn’t be sure who Ella would find her HEA with. Still not entirely sure.

Bottom line: One of my best recent reads. I’ll definitely buy the rest of the series.

Heroes Are My Weakness

Official Blurb

The dead of winter.
An isolated island off the coast of Maine.
A man.
A woman.
A sinister house looming over the sea …

He’s a reclusive writer whose macabre imagination creates chilling horror novels. She’s a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids’ puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill with laughs.

But she’s not laughing now. When she was a teenager, he terrified her. Now they’re trapped together on a snowy island off the coast of Maine. Is he the villain she remembers or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes.

It’s going to be a long, hot winter.

My Review (5 stars)

She: Annie, 32, a failed actress turned ventriloquist-puppeteer, tall with a “quirky amusement park of a face” packs her puppers (that have a tendency to speak their mind in her head) and heads off to Peregrine Island, ten miles off the New England coast. In the dead of winter. A New Yorker to the bone, she has run out of options.

He: Theo, 33, a hermit horror writer who reigned terror on Annie’s life in their teens–when they weren’t fumbling at making out. A psychotic personality or a tragic hero?

The conflict: Their tormented past. Rife with terror and grief, there are deeply ingrained perceptions that need to be flipped over.

The chemistry: Dormant at first, explosive when inhibitions are cast aside. Sex is mostly glossed over, but there’s plenty of heat in dialogue and foreplay.

The setting: An isolated gothic manor with turrets, residence of a horror writer? Rainy-day, hot-cocoa, pillow-cuddling worthy.

The good stuff: Everything about this book is good. The writing is excellent. Goes deep without becoming tedious and brings the setting to life. The characters are fully developed and multi-dimensional. Annie’s troubled relationship with her mother, Theo’s unending struggles are gradually revealed in the most effective way. Annie is a telaneted ventriloquist, and her continuous efforts to help a mute child through her puppet is nothing less than heart-rending. Actually, the puppets, each with her own distinct personality, steal the show at times, showing the reader the various sides of Annie’s personality even the repressed ones. The secondary characters, residents of the island are authentic, adding to the story rather than halting it (a big issue for me in community-driven stories). The mystery element is fantastic. With twists and turns when you least expect them, there is a villain that wants to drive Annie away. In that wintry setting, it’s absolutely delicious. The dialog is stellar. Annie’s wit is amazing. The banter between her and Theo brings laughter and tears. When will this book be made into a movie?!

The other stuff: Minor things. I would have preferred the actual sex not to be glossed over, but there is so much going on, it works fine as it is. Also, I’m not sure about the cover. The story is dark, and that cover channels chick-lit.

Bottom-line: A story rich in everything: mystery, love, pain, wit, there’s no way you won’t absolutely love it. One of the best books I’ve read so far this year.

Instead of kitchen cabinets, rough shelves held stoneware bowls and crocks. Tall, freestanding dark wood cupboards rose on each side of a dull black industrial-size AGA stove. A stone farmhouse sink held a messy stack of dirty dishes. Copper stockpots and saucepans¾not shiny and polished, but dented and worn¾hung above a long, scarred wooden prep table designed to chop off chicken heads, butcher mutton chops, or whip up a syllabub for his lordship’s dinner.

The kitchen had to be a renovation, but what kind of renovation regressed two centuries. And why?
Run! Crumpet shrieked. Something’s very wrong here!

Whenever Crumpet got hysterical, Annie counted on Dilly’s no-nonsense manner to provide perspective, but Dilly remained silent, and not even Scamp could come up with a wisecrack.

“Mr. Shaw?” Annie’s voice lacked its normal powers of projection.

When there was no reply, she moved deeper into the kitchen, leaving wet tracks on the stone floor. But no way was she taking off her boots. If she had to run, she wasn’t doing it in socks. “Will?”

Not a sound.

She passed the pantry, crossed a narrow back hallway, detoured around the dining room, and stepped through the arched entry into the foyer. Only the dimmest gray light penetrated the six square panes above the front door. The heavy mahogany staircase still led to a landing with a murky stained-glass window, but the staircase carpet was now a depressing maroon instead of the multicolored floral from the past. The furniture bore a dusty film, and a cobweb hung in the corner. The walls had been paneled over in heavy, dark wood, and the seascape paintings had been replaced with gloomy oil portraits of prosperous men and women in nineteenth-century dress, none of whom could possibly have been Elliott Harp’s Irish peasant ancestors. All that was missing to make the entryway even more depressing was a suit of armor and a stuffed raven.

She heard footsteps above her and moved closer to the staircase. “Mr. Shaw? It’s Annie Hewitt. The door was open, so I let myself in.” She looked up. “I’m going to need¾” The words died on her tongue.

The master of the house stood at the top of the stairs.

My Review

Eve wakes up in a hospital, but the angry torture marks on her body are not her main concern. Not knowing the first thing about who she is, takes her from a homeless shelter to LOST, an elite team of highly trained specialists whose job is to find missing people. She only hopes they take on cases of missing minds.

Gabe, an ex-SEAL and head of the team, can’t seem to fight his attraction for this gorgeous girl, but her story is out of this world, and he’s not sure if he trusts her. But someone wants her dead, and after the first attempt, Gabe and his team make it their life’s mission to track down a sadistic serial killer who’s been on the loose for way too long.

First off, this book is a lot darker than your usual romantic suspense. There is violence, and a seriously demented serial killer, bent on killing more. Cynthia Eden pulls off a feat here. She keeps throwing the reader off, piling up as many suspects as the victims. There are so many twists, casting shadows even on the protagonists, I found myself on the edge of my seat, mind whirring as to who the killer was. I’m usually very good at  that but, in the end, it wasn’t who I thought, so hat off to Ms Eden.

However, to be able to pull that off, the writer had to use many points of view which didn’t help me truly connect with the main characters. I wanted more time in Eve’s head, as she went through a crippling turmoil that ran the gamut of emotions, and I’d like to see that unfold in more detail. In that sense, this story felt more like watching an episode of Dangerous Minds.

The plot is multi-faceted, setting up the upcoming stories in the LOST series. The sexual tension is as high as the action between a woman who doesn’t even know her body’s reactions and a man who is torn between his attraction to and his distrust of her.

If you enjoy whodunit stories with a hot romance streak, Broken is the book for you.

BROKEN by Cynthia Eden – Excerpt

“Do you think I’m a con artist or a victim?”

“I think you’re a woman who has been hurt.” No denying that. “One of my team members, Wade Monroe, is contacting the Montgomery family. We’ll get DNA from them and find out—”

“If I’m Jessica.” There was hope in the words. Enough hope to break his heart.

Gabe nodded.

“When will we know?”

It would take a few days, even with the strings that he could pull. “As soon as possible,” he said, not wanting to give her a specific timetable.

“Thank you.” Then, just like that, she was across the car, giving him a tight hug. “Thank you.”

His arms wrapped around her, an instinctive response. She smelled faintly of flowers, a sweet scent that teased his nose, and her body was soft against his.

She tried to pull away, as if realizing what she’d just done.

For an instant he was tempted to hold her, to keep her close.

She’s a client. Focus.

He let her go, but his body ached.

“I … um … I should get inside.”

Yes, she should. While he was still clutching tight to his control. The control that said he shouldn’t push her. Shouldn’t want her so much. Not when she’d already been hurt so badly.

Her fingers reached for the door.

“Let me,” he said, voice rumbling, and Gabe climbed from the Jag. In seconds he was on the passenger side, opening her door for her. She rose, and her body brushed against his.

He stepped back. Distance. He seriously needed to put some distance between then. But even with some fast steps back, he could still smell that light and sexy scent that clung to her body. And he still wanted her.

“Your shrink asked me a lot of questions about you,” Eve told him as she stood temptingly close.

Gabe inclined his head. “I’m sure—”

“I think she wanted to know why I respond so much to you.”

Oh, hell, she’d just said … He cleared his throat even as part of his body surged in quick response to her. “It’s a tense situation, you’re—”

“You don’t look at me as if I’m a victim.”

He stopped talking.

“I mean, you know what I am, but you still look at me and seem to just see me … as a woman.”

“Others see you the same way.” Doc Tyler sure did. Bastard.

“It’s different with you,” she murmured as she stepped even closer to him. Her head had tilted back so she could look into his eyes. “I don’t know what I’ve felt for other men before.”

Why did the idea of others have his body knotting with tension?

“But I know that when I see you, I want.” A hushed confession. “I just … I needed to tell you that.”

And he needed to make his self-control a hell of a lot stronger. Her lips were just inches from his, and he wanted her mouth beneath his. Wanted her lips open. Needed to taste her.

“You’re the first man I’ve wanted since I opened my eyes in that hospital.”

He could actually feel his control splintering. Client. Cli—

“You probably don’t want me. I—I might not be your type.”

Now her gaze had fallen, as if in embarrassment. Had she really just asked if she was his type? She was probably every damn man’s type.

“But you make me feel normal again, so I had to tell you—”

His fingers curved under her chin. “Eve …”

Her smile was a little too big. Too bright. “I don’t think I can handle anything else right now, I’m …” She pulled away. Stumbled onto the sidewalk. “I just wanted to tell you how I felt,” she told him again.

Then she walked into the shelter, her steps hurried. As if she were running.

From him.

He stared after her. She wanted him.

And she was so fucking beyond his reach.
