Layna Blair has nothing. Not even a name. Being on the phone with her senator father when he and her mother were brutally murdered has turned her into a lethal man’s prisoner. She thinks she’s made a deal that keeps her out and safe, but she’s wrong. Her every move is monitored. The slightest misstep has scary people at her door. At nineteen, she has nothing to look forward to. The only place to look is behind her shoulder.
Blaze (Buck) Johnson’s mother is dying, and he came home from Afghanistan to be with her. Seeking out a church to find some peace, he instantly picks out a girl scared beyond reason. When his attempt to chat her up wreaks havoc, he knows she’s in mortal danger and helps her run. Defying her warnings that he’ll get in over his head, he shelters her at his friend’s, Talon’s, house.
Layna keeps warning her saviors that they’re getting in too deep, but she’s the one swimming in dark waters. She’s used to her life is at stake, but when her heart gets involved, she’s overwhelmed. Buck’s the one, but he’s so intense it’s scary, while Talon makes her laugh and shows her what it is to be free.
What a mess to be in when Colombian monsters are after you…
This book will definitely make my Top 10 list this year, and I know it even though it’s only April. I was 100% involved. The writing is unbelievably tight and no-nonsense, but still I got a full sense of place, time and setting. If 3-D characters are what an author aims for, these are 4-D. I could totally relate with Layna’s angst—which, in her case, is fully justifiable. Being alone and frightened for years, dreading the thought of anyone coming near her ending up dead, of course the attention of two strong and gorgeous men—very different personalities—would mess up with her. And of course she’ll mess things up when she acts spontaneously, not knowing if she’ll leave to see another sunrise.
An unyielding, intense marine who demands the world of her but can’t be there, and a seemingly carefree, sun-and-coconut guy who’s always there, saves her life and is torn between wanting Layna and being loyal to his friend. What a duo! The only thing that didn’t work for me was the male MCs’ ages. I can’t picture them in their early and mid-twenties, especially Talon. Another negative remark would be that traditional publishers sometimes don’t do their books’ covers justice. A minimally processed sexy stock photo and out the door is not how it should be.
August is way too long for me to wait for the next and final book. I’ll stalk the author to maybe give me an ARC. 🙂

Three years ago, Layna Blair listened in horror over a telephone line as her parents were murdered. When the killer said she was next, Layna panicked and made a deadly deal—his secret in exchange for her life. She’s paid the price every day since, becoming a prisoner in plain sight.
Marine Sergeant Blaze Johnson offers Layna a way out—her freedom, his rules, no questions asked—and she takes it, despite knowing what her keepers do to people who get too close. She doesn’t know Blaze is fighting his own demons or that beneath his warrior façade is a man on the verge of breaking.
Embarking on a wild revenge mission with Blaze and his smooth-talking best friend, Talon, is not what Layna signed on for. But attempting to run when Blaze has made no secret he intends to make her his is a reckless mistake. With the killer closing in, it’s up to Blaze to save them all—and to Layna to realize that she’s risked the one thing she can’t afford to lose.
About the Author
Here are ten things you probably really want to know about me.
I grew up a faculty brat. I can swear like a sailor. I love men in uniform. I hate being told what to do. I can do your taxes (but don’t ask). The Bird Market in Hong Kong freaks me out. My favorite word is desperate…or dirty, or both—I can’t decide. I have a thing for muscle cars. But never reply on me for driving directions, ever. And I have a new book boyfriend every week—don’t tell my husband.
